Upcoming Event: Rain2River Walk and Boat Tour with Duwamish River Clean Up Coalition

Event announcement, by Anna Mines (DRCC):

FINALrainwalkFlyer-page-001Have you ever wondered where storm water goes and how it affects our communities and our environment? Have you ever wondered what you can do to prevent this and keep our waters safe?

DRCC/TAG’s mission is to ensure a Duwamish River cleanup that is accepted by and benefits the community and is protective of fish, wildlife and human health.  Earlier this year, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released its Proposed Cleanup Plan for the Duwamish River Superfund site.  Now that the DRCC/TAG has finished gathering public input on the EPA’s proposed cleanup plan, our emphasis is shifting to address current, upriver and lateral non-point sources pollution into the Duwamish River.

A two-part pilot project will take place in the West Seattle community on November 10, 2013 and November 16, 2013.  The goal of this new Rain2River Walk and Boat Tour is to inform, educate and connect community members from certain geographic areas in the Seattle area that are not necessarily adjacent to the river, but whose polluted runoff (via stormwater drains or combined sewer overflows), drains on the Duwamish River, affecting its health and its communities.

284086-250The first part of the tour is a guided walking tour that will take place on Sunday, November 10, 2013.  The second part of the tour (taking place on Saturday, November 16, 2013) connects attendees to the Duwamish River by providing a FREE boat tour of the Duwamish site, where they will learn about the impacts of polluted runoff drainage, as well as site history and current recovery efforts.

Learn about rain gardens, sustainable practices, polluted runoff, and how your actions at home impact Seattle’s only river – the Duwamish – and its communities! Following the walk, everyone will receive passes for a free boat tour on the Duwamish River – you don’t want to miss it!
