A special message from Nature Consortium volunteer Allison Vasallo

Growing up near redwood forests in California, I discovered my love for cool and shady forested hikes. As a transplant into the Pacific Northwest, what drives me now is the understanding of the important role salmon play in our ecosystem from the coast to all the way inland upstream to their spawning site. I feel as if residents of our region relate to the salmon’s uphill/upstream struggle and we incorporate that into our own lives and work ethic.

I have been volunteering with Nature Consortium since the winter of 2012. When I first moved to Seattle in 2008 I worked in native habitat restoration for two years, so I personally feel a strong association between my being a Seattleite and doing restoration. When I was introduced to Nature Consortium in 2012, it revived my love for restoration after a two-year lapse of not doing any restoration work.

Not much else makes a weekend more fulfilling than restoring a patch of Seattle forest. By being a part of the Nature Consortium community, I continue to feed my love of habitat restoration. It’s a love I strive to share with others whenever possible.

In early 2014, my fiancé at the time and I were planning our wedding. By then we had already had a house full of things, so we didn’t want a gift registry. We still wanted our loved ones to help us celebrate our special day with a gift, so we decided to ask for donations to our favorite non-profits, including Nature Consortium.

Our friends and family gave gifts of $20, $50, even $100 to Nature Consortium in honor of our shared love for nature. This holiday season, we encourage you to do the same to support the vibrant ecosystem we all share.
