The Delridge Mural Project
The Delridge Mural Project, managed by the Delridge Neighborhoods Development Association (DNDA), began in 2013 with a graffiti paint-out. In Summer 2013, youth and teaching artists from DNDA’s Youngstown Cultural Arts Center painted 12 SDOT signal boxes along Delridge from Andover down to Henderson. In Summer 2014, the 210-foot mural titled “AWAKEN” was completed at Youngstown to culminate the project.
This mural depicts a story of the Delridge area, from the native Duwamish tribe, to the industrialization of the city and pollution of the Duwamish river, the cleanup and growth of the river and all of Seattle, the diversity of the neighborhood, and an honoring of the natural beauty that continues to surround us. The theme for the mural was determined by community input and through research done by the program participants and teaching artists of the Delridge Mural Project.
