Duwamish Alive! 10_11_08

Sharing is caring!

Today it was a beautiful day! Perfect for restoring a 15,000 sq.ft. area! We were only expecting at most 20 people, but when 42 showed up for the Duwamish Alive! Saturday at Cooper Elementary, we were more than surprised, we were ecstatic!

After going over tool safety, we hit our start point with full force. Some worked on the surrounding fields of our trouble area, some started right in the middle, others worked their way in, and another group started on taking back a mulch pile the invasive blackberry had almost taken over. Today was one of the most astounding work parties yet!

At noon, a harmonica and guitar duo called “Woody’s Machine” picked up our momentum. With their country sound aiding our souls, we must have gone into double-time, covering twice the area in half the time.

Along the way we found one of these guys (shown right). This particular native is a northern alligator lizard. We lately have been seeing more and more of these little guys coming out of hiding giving us hope that our efforts are helping them.

Once we completed our first task, we moved right on to planting trees! With the bulk half of the
group we placed, planted, tagged, and named 12 trees (1 cedar, 1 spruce, 3 Douglas Firs, and 7 Shorepine).

…………………

While some planted trees, others spread native rye straw, donated by Judd Creek Nursery, using it as a mulch over the 7500 sq.ft. area we planted in. Today was a huge success and thank you everyone who participated in restoring the Duwamish!

End result!
