Empowering young minds

Sharing is caring!

We took a trip to John Hay Elementary school in Queen Anne. We are in process of starting a project that we hope will continue even after these kids move on to the next grade. With the help of their teacher Ms. Burke, our team was able to come in and implant some ideas in the kids’ heads about various things.
We taught them about watersheds using some of their classmates as an example, and we discussed the importance of conifers and the current overgrowth of deciduous trees. We also explained the importance of our greenbelt and how our collaboration with them will make a difference. After we filled them full of knowledge, we moved onto preparing soil containers.
Each group acquired native seeds to plant in their soil as they learned about stratification, germination, and plant life. We covered the top with a dried coconut husk to hold in moisture and sprayed it with a squirt bottle. We hope that these seeds will sprout and grow into baby plants so the kids can come out to the greenbelt and put them in the ground. We’re off to a great start!

Jump up to Nov.19th to see what they did on their first day in the greenbelt.
