Helping hands, helping plant!
Today, kids from the Nature Consortium’s Youth Arts Program came out to learn a little about planting and maintaining trees! Each with their partner were equipped with a shovel and a Shorepine. We demonstrated how to properly plant a tree; making sure that the hole was deep enough, the roots were broken up, the root crown was still exposed as we buried it, and the dirt was compact enough there were no air pockets. As they completed the task bestowed, they got to name their trees and sing to them (trees react best to heavy metal). We also gave our trees’ protection with a ring of mulch around the base, being careful not to suffocate them, comparable to a ‘donut’. Planting season, we’ve just begun!
