It was a beautiful day Saturday, thanks to everyone who volunteered!
After a brief introduction we got right to work maintaining a 2,400 sq ft area by removing invasive Himalayan Blackberry, Tansy Ragwort, and Thistle.
When we finished cleaning the area, we discussed sheet mulching. All together, we mulched 350 sq ft of land. The first step was laying out the cardboard on the ground. This creates a natural barrier from invasive plants. Then we filled buckets of mulch, carried them over and spread them across the cardboard. This cardboard/mulch combination protects our native plants and deters the invasive plants from growing back.
Fortunately, we did our filling, carrying, and dumping to music by Trench Mouth!
We planted 9 Western Red Cedars and 4 Shore Pine when the mulching was finished.
Once the trees were planted we removed 3 dead trees and 5 topped conifers. We then spread spirea, Snow Berry, Fire-weed, Avens, and Clover seeds. By the end of the day there was a significant difference made in the area we worked on, thanks again everyone!!!
