SHA Summer Youth Program

The Summer Youth Program (SYP) is produced in partnership with Seattle Housing Authority at NewHolly, High Point and Rainier Vista.

DNDA offers our summer camp curriculum and year-round programming in conjunction with partners at SHA housing sites, building arts skills and athletic ability while supporting environmental education and bringing youth together in a positive environment.

In 2018 we hosted the first annual youth soccer tournament as part of SYP programming at High Point and New Holly and it was a major success! SYP may also include arts and environmental programs like music lessons, EcoArts projects, cooking, visual art and family events like the overnight family campout at Camp Long.

High Point

Cooking: From Italian Pasta to East African Doro Wot, youth will unlock their culinary potential and explore international recipes with cooking instructor Chef Mulu. This program will be in-person outside Van Asselt Community Center.
EcoArts: Youth will explore the intersection of art and nature through a series of arts and crafts activities during Fun Friday Street Play. These activities will be taught by DNDA teaching artists.
Street Mural: In this program, youth will have a chance to work on a beautification project in their local communities. Youth will work with local artists to design a community mural and make it come to life.
Soccer: In partnership with Intercity Soccer League youth will attend soccer practice with fantastic coaches to learn the fundamentals and scrimmage with their peers.
Basketball: Youth will learn to scrimmage and play basketball-related games at their local court. This program is in partnership with UPOWER and will be held at Neighborhood House basketball court.
Writing Workshop: This four-week workshop will teach youth how to interview, research, write and get to the heart of authentic community stories. We will connect youth to real-world professional networks by inviting writers to speak to workshop participants (virtually or in-person). Participants will complete one article or essay which will be published online.
Fun Friday Street Play: Families are invited to participate in art, recreational, community activities from 6:00-8:00pm on Fridays July 14, and August 4. This program will be on 31^st Avenue by the Neighborhood House basketball court.

NewHolly

EcoArts in the Park: Youth will explore the intersection of art and nature through a series of arts and crafts activities at local parks in NewHolly. These activities will be taught by DNDA teaching artists.
Creative Media: In this program, youth will have a chance to work with a professional videographer and learn the process of video taking and editing.
Soccer: In partnership with Intercity Soccer League youth will attend soccer practice with fantastic coaches to learn the fundamentals and scrimmage with their peers.
Leadership through Writing: High school girls are invited to participate in a six-week leadership program. Girls will learn about writing their story and sharing with their community.
Barber in Action: Youth can come shadow a professional barber as he offers free haircuts to youth. Come get your fresh summer haircut with Barber Meruts.

Rainier Vista

EcoArts Public Art: Youth will explore the intersection of art and nature through a series designing and painting a sculpture with professional artist in Rainier Vista.
Music Making Magic: In this program, youth will have a chance to work with a musician who will share how to write and play songs in their community.
Photography: Youth will get to learn the basics of photography and share the story of their community through a camera. Youth will work with a professional photographer who will share knowledge and fun tips.
Global Cooking: Youth will be introduced to a variety of fresh and fun ingredients to encourage creativity and intuition through cooking. Youth will also learn basic kitchen skills such as chopping, wrapping, plating, and working as a team! This class will be taught be Daneca Tran, a local plant-based chef.
